Made it to Kingfisher Resort (20th May)

We finally departed East Coast Marina on the 14th May and started heading north.
The plan was to spend the first night over at Tangalooma and we headed over in that direction but found the conditions rather unpleasant so elected to head back west again and spend the night on the pontoon out the front of the Moreton Bay Boat Club in Scarborough.
This is a very dangerous part of the world having your boat parked right in front of the bar but we survived it all quite well.  We were very lucky as it was a two for the price of one meals night so decided it was a good chance to have a meal off the boat.

The next day we headed off early for the trip up to Mooloolaba to yet another marina - yes we are keen to get out and drop the anchor.  You have to give the fisho's their dues in this part of the world - they are definitely a keen lot as seen by this chap fishing in the rain with unbrella on his kayak!!

The trip to Mooloolaba was very uneventful however, the entrance to the Mooloolah River has definitley silted up again which made our low tide arrival a little more exciting than normal with the waves breaking across the entrance.

We decided to stop for a couple of days in Mooloolaba.  Normally we like to stay a bit longer but the weather has cooled down quite a bit over the last few days with plenty of showers so swimming and body surfing is not all that attractive.

We did however get to catch up with our old cruising mates Col and Ann from Annacol who have a Hunter 45CC.  We first met them way back in 2011 when they came and grabbed our lines as we berthed in rather difficult conditions at Cairns.    This time they did one better by coming out in the pouring rain to grab our lines which was greatly appreciated as it was pretty blowy on arrival so always nice to have some assistance.

It was up bright and early on the 18th for the long 60NM trip up to the infamous Wide Bay Bar at the southern end of Fraser Island.  We made good time sailing up the coast and crossed the bar at 16:00H just after the start of the flood tide.  It is always a bit bumpy and uncomfortable but was a pretty good crossing.  We spent the night at Inskip Point with quite a group of boats - we are definitely not the only ones heading north.

On Sunday 19th we motored up to Garry's anchorage and spent the night there before heading through the shallows this morning.  There are pretty big tides at the moment which meant we had plenty of water to get through.

Garry's Anchorage
We are currently anchored out the front of the Kingfisher Resort which is always a good place to spend a bit of time.  Guessing we will probably stop for a couple of nights before the next leg which will be up to Bundaberg.

  1. The Wide Bay bar crossing is usually interesting - sounds a bit like you are going from marina to resort! Look forward to L.Musgrave post.
